Helpful Resident Transfer Tools

Residents with limited mobility pose significant hazards to care partners during transfers. There are some helpful resident transfer tools available, such as transfer sliding boards and pivot discs, when mechanical lifts are not an option.

Ideally a mechanical lift is used for non-weight bearing residents. However, not all residents and not all facilities can afford one. Transfer slide boards can be an excellent substitute in these circumstances. Knowing how to use one prior to working with a resident is key for a successful transfer. Read the Fairview Heath Services – Patient Education post, Using a Transfer Sliding Board.

Another tool that is available for residents who can either self-transfer or can bear weight with good stability but are unable to move their feet for a proper pivot is the Pivot Disc. Arthritissupplies.com offers an instructional PDF on the Safety Sure® Pivot Disc.

Tools such as these, in conjunction with safe-lifting practices and training, can prevent workplace sprains and strains.
