Working with Combative Residents in CRISIS

While it does not take an altered state for a resident to become combative, altered states frequently contribute to resident agitation and combative behavior. Knowing how to approach, how to distract and redirect and how to respond when nothing seems to work can keep you and your co-workers safe. The WorkSafeBC | Working with Dementia video discussion guide contains strategies and techniques on how to care for someone with dementia.

At times residents can go beyond simple agitation. They may go into crisis. Personal crises are not only emotionally difficult for care staff and other employees, but they can also present physical danger as well if not approached with care and compassion. A simple mnemonic may help those helping residents through crisis and keep everyone safer:

C – create a safe environment

R – remain collected

I – inquire after their world

S – select an item to help with

I – intervene as appropriate

S – start over or stop if able
